Frequently Asked Questions
THE LAZENBY'S EXPERIENCE
Q: How do I get started?
A: The first step is to call or email us so that we can gather some basic information about your project, such as location, rooms involved, design concept and timeline. We will then schedule an onsite meeting with you at the location where the work will be done.
At our first meeting, we will obtain an overview of the project and discuss various application techniques, as well as colors. Rik will bring photographs of his many past projects and samples of finishes from his portfolio. However, Rik does not like to replicate finishes in different homes or commercial settings. He takes great pride in listening to the owner's project ideas and designing finishes that are unique in some respect for each project.
Rik will do his best to create an end result that will fit your lifestyle and design concept. Notes will be taken and the areas measured so that a precise proposal can be delivered. Each technique involves different products and labor costs, so a firm price will be quoted when you have made your final decision concerning the areas, colors and faux or decorative finish to be used.
Q: Do you charge a consultation fee?
A: If the consultation is local, there is no cost for the initial consultation. If the consultation is over 30 miles in distance then a small consultation fee will be charged.
Q: Are you insured?
A: Yes, we carry both general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance licensed through the State of Alabama. You can rest assured that Lazenby's will come to your home fully prepared for every possibility.
Q: How much does a faux finish or decorative finish cost?
A: Our prices are very competitive for professional decorative and faux finishing. The cost can vary dramatically depending on the type of finish. Glazed finishes are usually the least expensive depending on the number of layers of glazes. Textures and specialty finishes are priced in the midrange, while the Italian Plasters and some of the specialty finishes can fall in the high end range.
Many times we can guide clients through the process of choosing a finish to help them stay within their budget. Often, when a budget is established, Rik can develop a project plan to get the most "bang for the buck" for the client.
Q: Do you work with new construction or commercial projects?
A: Most definitely! If your project is new construction or commercial, we can look at blueprints or design specifications and visit the job site to determine the scope of the project. We will also determine if our schedule will permit on time completion of your project.
Q: Do I need to be working with a designer or decorator?
A: It isn't necessary that a designer or decorator work with you on your project. However, you may find it helpful, especially when it comes to design concept, furniture, fabric choices, etc.
Q: How do I get my project on Rik's schedule?
A: A 25% deposit is required to schedule and begin the project.
Q: Will I see a sample of my finish?
A: Absolutely! Rik will create a custom sample board for your project. He will not begin with the application until you are happy with the sample.
PROJECT DETAILS
Q: What do I need to do before the project start date?
A: If possible, remove any breakable objects and art work/wall hangings and store them in a safe location. Please have the furniture placed away from the areas where work will be performed. We can assist with this if you need some help.
Rik will discuss what type of base coating is required. In some cases it will be necessary to have an area prepared prior to beginning the project. Any preparation requirements will be discussed and outlined beforehand.
Q: Can I use the room while the project is in progress?
A: Yes. We will clean up at the end of each day and store our supplies in a designated space for as little disruption as possible.
Q: How long does a project usually take?
A: This is a tough question to answer. Variables include the number of rooms involved, the types of finishes being utilized in the project, the drying time involved and the number of layers specific to the application. An estimated completion date can be given before the project begins.
Q: Will the walls/ceilings look exactly like the sample?
A: Since the sample board is typically less than 2ft. X 2ft., you should expect some variations. Keep in mind that this is artwork and is hand finished. Each project is unique. Rik will endeavor to get the finished project to look as close to the sample as possible and will ensure that you are satisfied with the end result.
Q: How far will Lazenby's Decorative Arts Studio, Inc. travel?
A: There really aren't many boundaries to Rik's work range. He is willing to travel long distances - even to international destinations if he is the right person for the project. Travel expenses can be rolled into your quote.
Q: Does Rik work alone?
A: While Lazenby's Decorative Arts Studio, Inc. is owned and operated by Rik Lazenby, he works with his daughter, Jennifer Lazenby and other talented artisans who can provide additional skills and expertise, if necessary, to complete his conceptual design.
Q: When is payment due?
A: Final payment is due when the project is completed. There may be times when a payment draw schedule is necessary if the project is large.
HOW TO HIRE A DECORATIVE ARTIST
Q: My painter said that he could do faux or decorative finishes. Should I take a chance?
A: We've met many painting contractors who do some decorative painting techniques well. But on the other hand, at least 20% of our business is fixing messes that uneducated painters got into without a specific background in decorative painting. Our products are specifically designed for the decorative arts industry. We approach your project from a different perspective, an artist's perspective. Rik has invested a great deal of time and money in continuing education, learning new products and techniques. Advanced color theory, product knowledge and attention to detail take many years of experience and quality education. Also, the materials we use are professional decorative arts materials that traditional painting contractors do not have access to. Quality materials help achieve great results.
Q: What questions should I ask when meeting with a decorative artist?
A: Because there are more and more people now entering the decorative arts field, it is very important that you ask specific questions and discuss credentials with anyone that you are considering for a project. It is very important that you view the artist's portfolio to determine the quality of the individual's work. If you are going to invest in a decorative finish for your home or business, the decision should be based on who can give you the quality that you require at a fair price. Good decorative artists are not necessarily the cheapest. People usually get what they are willing to pay for. Below are some questions to ask of anyone that you are considering for a project:
Do you have a portfolio of past work?
How long have you been working in the decorative arts field?
Who are some of your past clients?
Are you self-taught? (There are some outstanding artists in the area that are self-taught. However, there are many who are self-taught that do not have the skill level required for this demanding field.)
Where have you studied?
Do you carry general liability insurance?
Do you carry workman's compensation insurance?
Where will I fall on your calendar? (It is a fact of life that the better decorative artists will have work scheduled ahead on the calendar.)
